Astilbes
Astilbes, with their attractive feathery foliage and colours from white
throught to pink and red are still very popular. Heights range from 20cm
to 90cm. A damp soil is ideal, yet one finds them growing well in a herbaceous
border where the soil is a little moist

Bog
Plants
Bog Primulas flower in a wide range of colours and shapes. They require
moist soil possibly close to the pond of a rich organic nature. It is
always best to let them seed freely before cutting the dead flower heads
off. The more seedlings that grow, the merrier! If you can get them to
naturalise, they are wonderful in drifts.

and therefore do not need lining. They make planting out your pond easy
and are highly recommended.

Deep
Marginal Plants
As their name suggests, these grow in deeper water than marginals. The
depth differs with each variety. Some are ideal for tubs and sinks, others
are only for large ponds and lakes. Choose carefully!

Ferns
Out
of our range of ferns we supply, some are said to want drier positions
than others. On our nursery, they have to 'muck in' with the ones that
want moist conditions close to the ponds. They don't complain!
Why not create a fernery in a corner of your garden. It will give you
a lot of pleasure.

Floating
Plants
These help to cut out a certain amount of light entering the water of
the pond, which in turn, helps to prevent the water turning green. The
Eichornia, Hydrocharis, L. Polyrhiza and Pistia are generally not available
until May. Some varieties may grow abundantly in certain positions. Normally
they are easy to control.

Hostas
There is an enormous range of hostas now available to the gardener. We
stock just a few, but are always adding new varieties to our list. They
adore deep rich loam which is fairly moist, although they will tolerate
a position in the herbaceous border. They are grown for their foliage
which varies greatly in colour, shape and size. Flowers are normally white
or shades of blue.

Oxygenating
Plants
These palnts play a very essential role in any pond as they assist in
the balance of the pond. Technically, there are many reasons. One is the
release of oxygen during daylight hours, benefitting the fish population.
|
| | |
Water
Snails
Snails do not help keep the pond water clear. They do, however, keep at
bay a certain amount of rotting vegetation and any decomposing food in
the pond that may go unnoticed. One snail can be introduced for every
2sq.ft. of surface water of the pond.
